Self Promotion
A mail-ready piece which communicates “yourself” in physical form as a designer, encompassing what you bring to the table.
This project was awarded Design Excellence at the Herberger Institute for Design and the Arts at Arizona State University for the class Visual Communication III (GRA 361) in the fall of 2019.
All parts were laser cut, printed, wood stained, and assembled by hand
Illustrator / InDesign / Photoshop / Lightroom
3 x 9 x 1.25 inches, wood
The Challenge
For this project, I was challenged to identify how to highlight my strengths by creating a 2D or 3D mail-ready item that quickly shared my story, knowledge, and talents. The piece would market who I am as a designer for prospective jobs and clients. But how do you visually represent something that is “you?”
The Outcome
I am thoroughly obsessed with enamel pins so I found the solution to visually represent “me” as a set of three wooden pins enclosed in a box. The medium of wood also helped to convey my love of working with my hands. The typography of each pin is a pillar of my design philosophy as a short phrase, including a visual pun because I love to incorporate my humor into my designs when I can.
The Method
I began with mind mapping different aspects of my personality and interests. While sketching, I drew inspiration from my favorite designs which are tactile and interactive. After many sessions of brainstorming, I found my solution as a combination of my love for fabrication, typography, and packaging design as a set of three pins. Each pin is a pillar of my design philosophy. I define each phrase to communicate what they mean to me.
Once each design was in place, I laser cut the pins from 0.125 inch birch plywood and sanded everything by hand to a buttery smooth finish.
