Courage Over Comfort

The Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Committee at Arizona State University worked with our studio class to produce a visual strategy to encourage the continuation of Dr. King’s legacy.

Each team presented to the committee, went through rounds of revisions, and 5 out of 11 teams were chosen for a final presentation. Our team’s campaign, Courage Over Comfort, was selected as a finalist in the competition. I worked with Ashley Cameron, Hope Kiesling, and Scott Murray for this project.

The Challenge

Courage Over Comfort focuses on challenging the way we think about possibility by encouraging people to step outside of their comfort zone. Limiting yourself to your comfort zone puts you in a box. But when you choose courage over comfort, you are provoking change. We wanted to use imagery to be the voices of our powerful phrase, along with showing the subject(s) breaking the boundaries in a box.

Collateral for this project included an animation, social media campaign, bookmarks, t-shirts, and any other additional pieces that would fit within the Committee's budget.

Animation

The animation puts the concept of breaking out of the box, or comfort zone, into motion. Courage literally comes down over comfort and breaks the comfort zone box into a pair of brackets. The meaning of the lines change from limitation to liberation, effectively framing moments of courage. The act of courage is shown in full, vibrant color.

The Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. March on West is an annual tradition at Arizona State University’s West campus that dates back to 1991. Hundreds of students participate in recreating the historical 1963 March on Washington. These buttons are a perfect reminder of the experience for participants.
